Maximus 3.01 beta for Win32 =========================== Introduction ------------ This archive contains a beta Win32 version of the Maximus bulletin board program. This version of Maximus includes native-mode support for Windows NT and Windows95. TO USE THIS ARCHIVE, YOU MUST HAVE ALREADY INSTALLED THE DOS VERSION OF MAXIMUS ON YOUR SYSTEM. (The DOS files are contained in the MAX301C.ZIP and MAX301R.ZIP archives.) The program documentation is also included in the MAX301C.ZIP archive. This software is released in a beta form only. Although we are interested in hearing about problems with this beta, Lanius Corporation will not necessarily provide support for the Win32 version of Maximus. We also do not guarantee that this beta will be released as an official product. This beta may be freely used by noncommercial users. To use this program in a commercial environment, you must already be licensed to use either the DOS or the OS/2 version of the product. Please see the product license (contained in LICENSE.DOC) to determine if you are a commercial user. To order a copy of Maximus for commercial use, please see ORDER.FRM. Installation ------------ 1. Install the DOS version of Maximus. 2. Copy all of the *.exe and *.dll files from this archive into your \MAX directory. 3. In your batch and command files, replace all references to "max.exe" with "maxn.exe". You can also do this for the other Win32-specific Maximus utilities contained within this archive. Notes for this release ---------------------- - Like the OS/2 version of Maximus, the Win32 version cannot run DOS doors. This is a limitation of the Win32 and OS/2 file sharing mechanisms, rather than a problem with Maximus itself. - Communications I/O in this release may not be optimal. The Win32 version uses a multithreaded communications library to communicate with the com port, but this has not been extensively tested. Known problems -------------- 1) Pasting text into the Maximus console window does not work under Windows 95. 2) Local screen I/O is somewhat slow. In a future release, we should be able to halve the time required to update the local screen. 3) CPU usage is not optimal when running in local mode. Maximus may use somewhat more than its normal time slice when running in local mode. This should not be a problem for remote callers. 4) Under Windows 95, you cannot run Maximus under BinkleyTerm. That combination will work fine under Windows NT, but problems with Windows 95 itself prevent BinkleyTerm from passing the communications port handle to Maximus. (However, Maximus can run under Windows 95 if you use WFC mode only.)
